And it made our car outstanding on the road.

The second week, we forgot to wash the car again. Even Helios, a man who seldom reacted to the outsiders' opinions, started to feel panic.

As every car! Every! Single! We don't need to worry about how dirty it is!

There are at least four car wash stores in the intersection of our neighborhood. I always wondered how they could have business in such a small town.

I have to admit, I am totally wrong. The market demand is overwhelming.

Anderson Shelter

(Feb 08. 2021)

Alexander tried to persuade his dad to buy and install a morrison shelter or an Andeerson shelter at home.

He also tried to convince his dad that eating less pistachio would be good for his health as when war times comes, only small children or two thin

That Child

Sibyl Jing

(Feb 08. 2021)

Alexander tried to persuade his dad to buy and install a morrison shelter or an Andeerson shelter at home.

He also tried to convince his dad that eating less pistachio would be good for his health as when war times comes, only small children or two thin parents could fit in the morrison shelter, or else he might get stuck in between.

Helios made a strange grin, and said: “It is fine. I asked.

He first proposed a fruit cake with sponge cake base and strawberry cream filling with a cherry on top.

And he laid emphasis on the cherry on top and described it as sweet glossy like candy. I did google Sweetened cherry. Finally I realized what he wanted was Maraschino cherry.

But he changed his mind even before I drafted the cake design. “Can you make a dog-shaped cake?

NO! I refused right away.

“Why not, MOM? You cannot give up so easily before you give it a try.” He added, “that is what you’ve been teaching me.”

“I know what I am capable of, and your request is totally beyond my ability.” I started to feel offensive.

He was quite a bit. Then he quickly came up with another new proposal that really pissed me off. I know I should not lose my temper, but I just could not hold it anymore.

He asked: “what about making a christmas tree?”

“No Alexander. You don’t understand.” I raised my voice, “ making cake is not like you snap the finger and you get what you want just like magic. It takes time to prepare! I spent the whole night preparing fruit cake with cherry on top, but you kept changing your mind. I really cannot deal with it.”

“FINE!” he yelled back, running back to his room.

A few minutes later, he came out again with a piece of paper on hand. He handed the paper to my nose, and said: “Ok, no more argument, and this is my final offer.”

He scribbled a big triangle in the middle of the paper, on top of which stood a cherry. And he wrote a short note next to it: Pyramid with cherry on top.

And that is the whole story of Alexander’s 7-year-old birthday cake.

I swear, I’ve tried, to my best.

Left: before | Right: after

Stateless

It seems Helios never knew that Alexander’s middle name got two words.

The first time I realized it was several months ago when Alexander wrote down a K, Helios wiped it out and said: “No no no, it was not your middle name. Your middle name should be L.”

But K was my last name. And we decided to use L.K as his middle name TOGETHER when he was born. That night when we finally made our mind, he leaned against a chair, and laughed out loud like a psychic, because it did sound fun when it was translated to our native language.

Tonight, we got an email from the school district about Alexander’s placement, in which Alexander’s full name was clearly stated. Helios shouted when he opened the email: “What? Is Alexander’s middle name got two words?!”

Two years ago, when we went to The Pancake House in McCall for the first time, Helios ordered two dishes out of hundreds of dishes printed on a newspaper-like menu. A year ago, we went to that place again, he placed the same order AGAIN before he realized he did the same thing a year ago.

He was very proud of that, as he said it is STATELESS as defined in the engineering industry.

Oh Well, he showed the stateless state after he learned Alexander’s middle name 7 years after he'd become his father.
